Happy Halloween

A spooky cake for a spooky day. This cake won me "Best All Around" at our work's Halloween Snack Day.

Cupcake

Here's a cake I made for my mother-in-law's birthday. Wilton makes a giant cupcake pan. It turned out pretty cute.

Paint Palette

This paint palette cake was for a 3 year old's paint party! The paint brush is fondant, everything else is buttercream icing.

Winnie the Pooh

This was for my sister-n-law's baby shower. I made this cake from a Winnie the Pooh shaped pan.

Bouquet

This bouquet was for my mother-in-law. A tasteful way to say I love you!

It's a boy!

This cake was for a baby shower. The front had the babies name on it. The polka dots are fondant.

Happy Thanksgiving

Gobble, gobble. This cake is all buttercream icing

Silly String

Looks a bit like silly string... All buttercream icing.

First home

This cake was for a housewarming party. The homeowner's last name is White...

Graduation Cap

This cake is made from a graduation cap pan. Covered in buttercream icing.

Notre Dame

This cake was made for a Notre Dame fan's wedding shower.

Fall

This cake is covered with buttercream icing. The leaves and acorns are made from fondant/gumpaste mixture.

Boston Red Sox

This cake is all buttercream icing. I attempted the piping gel transfer but ended up free handing most of this cake.

Camping

There's a lot to this cake: Trees are ice cream cones covered with royal icing Canoe, tent, sleeping bag are fondant Fish are swedish fish (candy) - water is colored piping gel Firewood is pretzels with royal icing for flames

Care Bears

This cake is all buttercream icing.

GIANT CUPCAKE

If you like a lot of icing you'll love this cake. It's a two layer cake with a mound of icing on top. Don't forget the cherry... it is icing too!

Curious George

This cake is all buttercream icing.

Dinosaur

This was another cake for my nephew. This year he is into dinosaurs. This was my first attempt at a carved cake. I personally love the teeth!!! Can you guess what they are?

Flowers

There's so much you can do with these gumpaste flowers.

Flowers

I made this for my mother-in-law's 50th birthday.
The flowers on this cake are made from gumpaste. Everything else is buttercream icing.

Green Lantern

For all you comic book nerds, this cake is for you... I made this cake for my husband's birthday. All buttercream icing!

Harley Davidson

My father-in-law is a big Harley fan... He only likes to eat store bought icing so I created this cake using it. It's hard to decorate with the thinner icing but it can be done.

Monster Trucks

Some cakes are just fun to make. This cake was for my nephew. He was very into monster trucks. The dirt on this cake was made by crumbling up graham crackers.

Finding Nemo

This cake is all buttercream icing. Nemo is actually shaped from cake and raised above the "water"

Ohio State

Made for a Buckeye fan... This cake was made using the piping gel transfer. Most was one freehand since the gel doesn't transfer very well.

Penn State

All buttercream icing. Notice how smooth the icing is on this cake. To get your icing this smooth, I use Viva Brand paper towels. After the icing has been applied to the cake gently rub the icing with the paper towel. You can also use paper towels with a texture to create different patterns on your cake.

More polka dots!

This cake is all buttercream icing. Polka dots are great for any occasion.

50 is FUN

This cake is covered with buttercream icing. The polka dots are made of fondant.

Race Track

I made this cake for my nephew's 2nd Birthday. He loves fast cars and trucks so I thought this was perfect. He also liked the idea of keeping the trucks when the cake was gone.
To make the track I used 2 8" round cakes. Cut an equal amount off of each cake and slide them side by side to create the figure 8.

Roll Tide

I made this cake for my dad's birthday. This cake was very time consuming. I originally tried to use the piping gel transfer from a picture but ended up doing the cake freehand. Piping gel tends to glob up regardless of the tip size you use to trace the image. Freehand was hard, but everyone loved this cake.
Roll Tide!!!!

Sesame Beginnings

This cake was made for a 1st Birthday. The Sesame Beginnings characters are buttercream icing.

Funky Girl

Who can resist a fun and funky birthday cake?

Tombstone - and I don't mean pizza

This tombstone shaped cake is a hit for any Birthday!!!

If the shoe fits

This cake was also pre-classes. Made for my closest and dearest friend!!! Valerie loves shoes so I thought these "fancy" shoes were perfect to top her 30th Birthday cake. They originally had Snow White on them so I took that "bling" off and added the flowers.
Use your imagination when making a cake for someone. Think of things they like. It doesn't have to have edible decorations!

Choo-Choo!!!

This cake was for my nephew's 1st Birthday (pre-cake classes)
I got this idea from kraftfoods.com website. They have some good recipes and ideas. I added the cupcake trees. I had leftover cake mix so I had to do something with it.
It's amazing what you can do with some cake mix and candy!!!
One thing I'll recommend for cakes - make sure you cover the cake board in something that will not soak up grease. I made the mistake of using tissue paper for this cake. I recommend using cake boards that have wax on them, foil made for covering cake boards (not regular foil) or I like to use wrapping paper and cover it with contact paper. This takes time, but displays your cake on a nice surface.

Spiderman

Here is a cake I made for my nephew. The cake was made using a Spiderman pan by Wilton. I recommend using Wilton Cake Release for all of your cakes. It keeps your cake from sticking and doesn't make it taste like grease. I apply cake release with a silicone brush. Make sure you coat the whole pan, paying close attention to sides and details if you are using a character pan.

My final cake...

Wilton Class Course 4 was about Royal Icing flowers and the final cake was making and assembling a wedding cake. This was fun to make although it was very time consuming.
I think I passed!

Bonnet

This cake is from Wilton Course 3. We learned how to cover the cakeboard in fondant and cut out designs for the cake. The idea of this cake is to look like a bonnet. I personally don't like this very much, but everyone has their preference!!! It is a good idea, but mine didn't turn out as well as I'd like. You live, you learn!

More flowers!

This cake was from Course 3 as well. We learned how to make more flowers. These are made from gumpaste. It dries hard like royal icing except gumpaste flowers can seem more realistic than Royal icing because you can control the thickness of them better.

Open me!!!

This cake is from Wilton Course 3. All about fondant.
Fondant doesn't have much of a taste, but you can do so much with it. This class was learning how to cover the entire cake and cutting fondant.
Covering the cake is harder than it looks. AIR BUBBLES!!! But it adds elegance to a cake.

Flowers

Wilton Course 2 was about making flowers. Royal Icing (like the candy on the cardboard they sell in the store) was used for these flowers.
Royal icing is easy to make. It dries very quickly so you have to work fast with it. I like it because you can make a ton of these flowers to use anytime on cakes.
Notice the basket weave on the side of this cake. We learned to make it as well. It spiffs up any cake!

Clowning Around

This cake is from Course 1 of the Wilton Class. We learned how to make clowns. Not something I'd make a lot, but it was interesting to learn.

Wilton Class - Cake 1

I've always liked decorating cakes. About a year ago I decided to take the Wilton Method Cake Decorating classes. It was a lot of fun and I learned some good techniques. With that, my cakes have gotten better over time.
The cake to the left is the first cake that we decorated in the class.
This cake taught how to smooth the buttercream icing and also taught us how to do a piping gel transfer - which doesn't work very well at all. It's easier to free-hand.
